How could a small, dedicated team scale a high-touch curatorial model into a multivendor marketplace without overwhelming their resources?

PROJECT BACKGROUND

From a handpicked selection to a multivendor marketplace

Arch began as a small private initiative of enthusiasts with a mission to provide curated dancewear collections. Relying on expertise and a high-touch approach,  they handpicked products from the world's best brands and boutiques.

This core commitment to curation was the natural foundation for their evolution. To scale their vision, they aimed to move beyond a traditional store and launch what Marketplacer recognized as "an exciting new marketplace initiative in the dance industry."

The ultimate goal was to transform their handpicked selection into a comprehensive, multivendor platform.

To the client, Amitech Group’s BigCommerce SaaS Connector checked most of the boxes, presenting a sensible cost-quality ratio. They scrutinized the team’s experience in integrating and customizing multivendor marketplaces and noted the Marketplacer certification.

CHALLENGE

Ruling out category management overkill

Arch faced challenges in both technical and operational spheres. While the BigCommerce Connector app was installed and onboarded within days, requiring no engineering support, further adjustments were still necessary.

Each Marketplacer update led to the loss of manual category changes, requiring redundant data entry. To prevent data loss, it was critical to rebuild the underlying logic.

The standard Connector logic implied overwriting product categories in BigCommerce with those from Marketplacer. This approach involved the risk of erasing the manual modifications made directly in BigCommerce.

For instance, if a BigCommerce store manager renamed Marketplacer's default category by adding “Top Selling”, the syncing process would revert it to the original default.

SOLUTION

Customized self-service BigCommerce Connector securing category adjustments

Amitech Group’s BigCommerce Connector app facilitated a near-instant marketplace launch for Arch, enabling sales from day one.

To resolve the category sync issue, the team updated the solution’s logic and executed a bulk sync to apply the fix.

The new category syncing behavior

The Connector app will now safely preserve any categories that are manually added in BigCommerce, regardless of Marketplacer updates.

This improvement unlocks new functional capabilities:

  • Implementing product collections by enabling custom curated categories like “Recommended” or “Top Selling”
  • Maintaining multiple category trees within both BigCommerce and Marketplacer to branch subcategories from several root categories
